Welcome To Comic Book Wednesday;July 1st 09!

Evening everyone!

Just finished dinner and reading the first issue of Vertigo’s ” The Unwritten ” and this promises to be an entertainer. More on this after I finish issue#2…okay so let’s get to it…

This week made up for last weeks lack of titles.

Marvel this week has dominated my pull list with  six titles in all including two trade editions of a particular hero who I will talk about later…

This weeks DC pulls consisted of just three titles.

And so the first publisher to talk about this week is.…drum roll please.….…

IDW Publishing

Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s awesome title Locke & Key ” Head Games ” has come home, and I know I’ve said this before, and I have no problem saying this again…I just love reading this comic.

A great story, lot’s of action, weirdness, and just some great artwork to boot!

The comic comes in at a price of $3.99, but the covers alone are always high quality, and I’m not just talking about the artwork, the way the covers have been produced such as issues with what feels like ” Gilt Embossed ” or parts of the cover ( such as this issue ) that seem to have the main character ” kind of floating ” if you will against the cover…I know it’s kind of hard to envision…guess you just have to have the comic to really appreciate what I’m trying to describe.

And what I really appreciate is the fact that the comic itself is actually the whole comic, not a ton of ads, no added pages with a different characters story as filler.

Oh, and there will be another story arc in the fall called ” Crown of Shadows “…I’m a happy fanboy.

DC Comics

Dead Romeo issue#4– So far I’m kind of lukewarm on this title, as I thought it had lots of promise and it’s just not showing me anything extraordinary in three issues so far..although I will say that the end of issue three was pretty interesting, as our hero just may have turned the girl he was supposed to be protecting into a vampire…while suffering from a delusion from a bad dream he just had.

Batman & Robin issue#2 of the ” Batman Reborn ” storyline going through all the bat titles now.

Poor Dick Grayson…finding himself having to follow in the footsteps of someone who left an indelible imprint on Gotham City and it’s citizens…it’s criminal element and it’s police force…and especially a certain Police Commissioner named Gordon.

So far, I’m tolerating the artwork of Quitely, I mean certainly this is not Jim Aparo or Jim Lee, but the art is growing on me for the moment anyway. The story itself is still too early to really judge if it’s good or bad yet, but I’ll tell you right now…Damian is just ten years old…Dick and Alfred both need to give this kid a good ” backhand ” to the mouth..that should take some of the attitude out of him!

Justice League; Cry for Justice issue#1 of seven –Okay my only complaint is this…40 pages of comic..broken down like this…24 actual pages of comic…including a ” The Origin of Congorilla ” filler … 9 pages of advertisements…arghhh!!!…and 5 more pages of needless filler…and for a price tag of $3.99!

Okay, DC if I have to pay this type of cash for a comic…how about giving me more comic and less ads and less filler ehhh…?

Okay, I’ve already mention in my video cast the other day the good stuff about this comic, so I won’t do that again, but I will do a review very shortly on this first issue okay…

Now for the Marvel Stuff this week..

The New Avengers issue#54 ( wow, really 54 issues of this title! ) and they have been all excellent so far. The search for a new ” Sorcerer Supreme ” continues in this issue…and apparently it isn’t Daimon Hellstrom, the Son of Satan..but I didn’t think it would be…just a gut feeling I had!

Daredevil issue#119 — continues the storyline ” Return of the King ” and we’re not talking about any of those other kings ( go ahead name one…we’re not talking about him! ) we’re talking about the Kingpin of Crime, Wilson Fisk.

This issue features some of the best of DD’s rogues gallery including the King, the Owl, and Lady Bullseye.

Utopia issue#1 Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men-This looks to be a major crossover in the X-Titles and quite honestly since I have not been a X-Title follower for quite a while, this was an impulse purchase and more than likely I will not be following this in the other titles. Not much to say here with this one so far, but on the plus side ( for me anyway ) is the art by Silvestri and it just looks excellent!

Warning…this is another comic priced at $3.99, with lots of ad pages.

Remember what I said at the end of my video cast the other day…when it comes to comics…Dead isn’t always Dead!

which brings me to this project…

Captain America Reborn issue#1 of 5– by Brubaker, Hitch and Guice

Okay, so the title of this one is pretty much is self explanatory, and since I have not read it as of yet, I cannot say too much about this one yet, but I do have a suspicion at the moment after looking at a few pages already…sorry but I won’t share my suspicions yet..but their coming…

And onto my two Trade Editions…

I’m sure most of you reading these pages are familiar with one Danny Rand…what?

What do you mean, whose Danny Rand..he’s Iron Fist, that’s who!

Actually Danny is just one of many who has held the mantle of the Iron Fist…there have been sixty seven all in total, and that is the focus of the first of the trades…titled…

The Immortal Iron Fist ” The Book Of The Iron Fist “, which collects issues 7,15–16, Immortal Iron Fist: Orson Randall and The Green Mist Of Death, and Immortal Iron Fist: The Origin of Danny Rand…brought to you by Fraction and Brubaker

The second trade is brought to us again by the team of Fraction and Brubaker…

The Immortal Iron Fist: The Seven Capital Cities Of Heaven collects issues 8–14 and also the Iron Fist Annual#1

Now, I have been familiar with Danny Rand for several years and so I am familiar with his origins…when the character was again given his own series  ( maybe, I’d say ) about two years ago now, I did not take a look at the series.

By the time I started to look at the comics, I was going to have to start to play catch up with the series, and I just never found the right point to get on board with the series.

So I felt that this was the best way to get back in touch with Danny Rand and his new adventures…and I think I’m in for a real wild ride here folks!

So that’s it for this weeks Comic Book Wednesday, to the tune of $60 semolians!

And I think I ought to get some sort of cash back just for the adds found in two of this weeks comics!
