Good Morning Everyone.
As you know, I did go out and pick up the ( replacement? ) to New Type USA last night.
PIQ magazine is just a pale reflection of my beloved and now sorely missed New Type. The mag comes in at a minuscule 112 pages, plus a manga insert at 15 pages for a grand total of 127 pages, including advertisements.
The magazine seems to cover a bit of everything…from Anime to Comics to Videogames.
Unfortunately, most of what I browsed thru last night is not new and informative…for example the article about Marvels Secret Invasion was ( in my opinion ) short, and really did not touch on anything that we readers probably already did not know about, and an article about the Anime industry titled ” Is Anime Dead “, was actually five articles that tried rather disjointedly to tie together the article, but really did not answer the question, touching on ( and I am not making light of this practice ) the illegal download of anime, and focused on the business model (s) that make up the anime industry, and what could be done to improve said business model (s) to help float the anime industry as a whole. I have to say that this article did strike a chord with me, but all in all it just seemed weak, and again was not really new information that I think we as part of the anime community were not already aware of.
Personally, I think this magazine is a mistake( and for whatever reason, the people responsible for New Type Magazine are also responsible for this mag also ) only because there are already magazines that cover Videogames, Comics, and ( while not what I would refer to as absolute authority ) there are at least three magazines that cover Anime to some degree or another.
So what does this mean for the readers of the now defunct New Type…
At this point, if you are looking for a mag that just focuses on what you really love ( and includes a DVD insert ) I guess you and I will have to settle for the new magazine called Otaku USA, which seems to follow the formula of the now defunct New Type and gives us a solid base on Anime and Anime Culture in general, so goodby to New Type and ( possibly ) hello to Otaku USA.
I shall now play taps for the dearly departed…
