I have to say that this is not the first time I’m watching this DVD.
I wanted to give this DVD a fair chance considering the subject of the movie…Superman / Doomsday is an adaptation of the comics series done several years ago, which became a world wide phenomenon, and world class event, long before we took notice of the Death of Captain America.
First of course, taking the subject of Doomsday, and what was pretty much almost two to three years of story buildup and events, and boiling it down to just around 75 minutes really does not do the story justice, but for the uninitiated, this does deliver the goods in a condensed sort of manner.
Doomsday, is the unstoppable, alien killing machine that is found buried underneath the Earth’s surface, in an excavation undertaken by Lex Luthor’s Lexcorp ( something that was not part of the original plot in the comics ) and after killing several members of the expedition, and a few others along the way, the monster heads for Metropolis and his fateful showdown with the man of steel.
The battle between Doomsday and Superman is epic ( and I was watching this on a surround sound system ) so I was able to feel every punch, every window being broken and the earth shaking explosions. This I have to admit translated well from the comics and was not a disappointment at all…..but as I said before this is at best a watered down version of the whole tale…Eventually after several days ( or weeks maybe ) in a time of crisis, due to the mechanizations of the Toyman, Superman seemingly awakens from his death and bursts out of his grave-site to stave off the danger of the Toyman.
Superman comes to the rescue, but someone notices something might be amiss…and that someone is Lois Lane. In this adaptation, she and the man of steel are already involved in a serious relationship, which again I’m almost positive did not happen in the comics until much later, but I digress….Lois does some investigating and finds…..
Well, I don’t want to give the whole plot of this DVD away, so I think I’ll just stop right here, but I have to say, as a stand alone feature, if you are looking to possibly make this a purchase for a younger Superman fan, this would be a good purchase….but………if you remember the series several years ago, I think you might be a bit disappointed with this watered down version of the epic story.
I give Superman /Doomsday…3 stars for great animation and great production value and a decent enough adaptation.
