Did you read this comic yet? No…well I finally moved it to the top of my pile of unread comics last night, and I’m kicking myself for not doing it sooner. Finally, Thor is starting to get interesting, with the humbling beat-down finally being put on Tony Stark, aka Iron man!
Thor arrives in New Orleans, and comes face to face with that city’s fate…he see the devastation to the city and realizes that had he been here several months ago, he could have changed the course of events and saved the city from it’s fate. He is told by a local man, one who has lost everything, that they don’t want ” his kind ” there and in anger, questions ” where were you when we needed you the most? ” Thor’s simple, but contemplative answer is ” I was dead ” to which the stranger becomes dismayed, and has no answer to Thor’s reply…but the Thunder God sees something in the man soul…
Iron Man at that moment, arrives in New Orleans to talk with his old friend, and also to apprise him of the nation’s current status as far as the heroes go, and gives Thor a ” directive ” to pick a side ( obviously hoping that the Thunder God will see his side of the conflict that is still effecting the marvel universe )…Unfortunately for him, Thor has his own agenda….Thor’s anger swells and shakes the heavens, as he shows his old friend what a thunder god is capable of and winds up pummeling Iron Man, and totally destroys his much vaunted armor by causing an Electro Magnetic Pulse.
Stark is sent back to Shield Headquarters, a shaken and humbled director.
Thor returns to the man who had been brave enough to let loose his anger about his current a situation….the Thunder God recognizes a fellow, lost , tormented soul, lying within this mortal…
” Yes, his soul is torn, his grief is terrible. ” ” But the grief is not just his alone…” ” and the grief of gods was never for mortals to bear.”
Then Thor tells the little girl who is with this mortal man to step away, ” There are some things never meant for mortal eyes to see ….”The Thunder God then raises Mjlionor, his vaunted hammer and raises a storm of lightning and thunder…and in this storm, Thor calls forth the soul of his friend Heimdall, ” Come forth. Live. Live again ”
Meanwhile, back at Shield Headquarters, Tony Stark is informed that Hi-Res imaging has picked up another presence on the ” Target “, said target being Asgard, floating eight feet above the Earth… ” OPS is asking for orders. What should we do about this sir?”
Stark’s reply…” Nothing. We let it go…” ” For Now…”
And thus ends issue 3 of Thor, a comic which has been moving a bit too slow for my liking in issues 1 and 2, but this issue more than makes up for the pacing of the last two issues, and just maybe…I’m starting to like the direction this series is going in. I can only hope that Straczynski can start to pace this series just a bit faster.
