Rex Mundi or the Truth about Jesus… August 29, 2007

Posted by 54071 in : Comic Reviews , add a comment

Hi to all! I have decided that I cannot give a full review of this series in just one post, just not gonna happen so I will try to give the high points of each book, without giving away any spoilers if at all possible, so here goes…

If you missed the first post about this three part story just click here…and if you did catch part one, just follow me okay…

I want to start by setting up the main characters in this story…

Master Physician Julien Sauniere.

A member of the High Guild of Physicians with a small private practice that caters to the common people of France

Julien Sauniere approached by Father Marin, a priest of La Madeleine for thirty years with a secret charge…

Father Marin is the caretaker of a secret cache of Manuscripts hidden below the church…and one of the manuscripts has been stolen, and he suspects Spellcraft!

Genevieve Tournon

Julien’s old flame, and fellow doctor who is appointed as the personal physician to the Duke of Lorraine.

Genevieve burns the candle at both ends by dating the Duke, and also rekindling her romance with Julien.

The Duke of Lorraine

The Duke of Lorraine hails from a powerful family that traces it’s roots to….opps sorry, but if I told you that, I’d be giving away a major plotline of the series….

The Duke has plans to unite all of France with territories that had previously been a part of or in some cases actually belonged to France….but the Duke’s ambitions spread farther than this…

Okay, these are the main characters…so lets go to the story itself…

Rex Mundi is set in ( or on ) an alternate earth, with an alternate history…

The American Revolution ended in a stalemate…

The Catholic Church controls Europe….

And Sorcery determines political power….

In book one, we are introduced to Dr Sauniere, who is paid a visit by Father Marin after office hours…actually way after office hours…One O’Clock in the morning to be exact, to tell Julien of his secret and of the missing scroll. Fearing what would happen to him should the Inquisition find out of this lost manuscript, the father begs Julien to help him, and thus the mystery begins.

Julien and the father go to the rectory in La Madeleine, where they begin their search for clues…one of the clues is revealed to Julien although at the time, he (and we the reader )are unaware that it really is a clue…there was a scent of sandalwood, with notes of sulfur underneath….Julien finally asks the father if anyone else had known of this secret…at first the father tells him no…but than admits that there is one other….a woman named Marie Christine…a Prostitute.

Julien, hoping to find this manuscript, tries to find this prostitute at a flophouse where she works out of, only to find she has been killed and horribly mutilated in what looks like a ritualistic ceremony.

A missing manuscript and a dead body…the mystery deepens and Julien looks for more help.

He looks to an old friend for help… Albert Maiselles…a Jew. Julien knows Albert thru his practice, Julien is the only Licensed Guild Physician who will treat Jews in Paris.

Julien tells his tale to Albert and he also asks Albert whazt he knows about Sandlewood and Brimstone…

That’s it for tonight, but more to follow in book one…

Rex Mundi Review Coming Tomorrow August 27, 2007

Posted by 54071 in : Comics , add a comment

Hi There!

I finally finished the three trade editions of Rex Mundi and I will have me concluded review tomorrow of this series tomorrow, but in the mean time here’s what I picked up on Wednesday…

The Ride issue two from Image

Justice League issue 10 from DC, the last part of the Lightning Saga, which for me just was very anti-climatic

and something that I had seen advertised several months ago from Image called  ” The Surreal Adventures of Edgar Allen Poo ” , more about this title later.

After laying my Mom to rest a week ago, my wife and my friend Ken and his girlfriend Candace went to see a movie ( the first time I had been out at all in over four months ) and we saw the movie ” Stardust ” which was based on a comic originally published by DC Comics written by Neil Gaimen and art by Charles Vess, which is now available in a trade edition.

Anyway, the movie was decent enough with a charming premise for a plot, now I might have to read the trade edition to see if the movie does the source material any justice.

By, and see you here tomorrow.

Comics, Comics & More Comics! August 22, 2007

Well, I’m about two weeks behind in my comics reading due to several reasons, but the major reason is reading the mysterious and complicated Rex Mundi three trade set, of which I am finishing book the third this weekend…in the meantime, I just picked up about 60 bucks worth of books that were on hold for me the other day, which just added to the stack of backlog I already have of unread titles, so to get myself out of my writing backlog, I will finish my Rex Mundi review in one post, because truth to tell, I will actually have to re-read this one to really fully understand everything that is going on with this series, but I will tell everyone now that if any of you enjoyed the Da Vinci Code ( either the book, the movie or both ) this is a series you will want to read.

After that review, I will list the rest of my comics going up for sale, than the figures that I will be selling, and than I will talk about issue seven of the Gunslinger Born, which I haven’t read yet, and do a review of the entire series.

Whew! That’s alot of work to do….

Getting ready to do my Brooklyn run, but I would be remiss if I did not do this quick link to a post that Cullen M. M. Waters wrote the other day about Supergirl the other day that caught my eye.

I’ll be posting some more comics that I’m putting up for sale later tonight, when I get back home, and running a few errands…including getting a new heater for my saltwater tank that just exploded a few moments ago…might be an indication of what kind of day I can expect.

See you all later. :)

Thor Finally Arrives Home! August 8, 2007

Hi There!

Well, today as usual is ” Comic Book ” day! Still my favorite day of the week.

And guess who had finally arrived to be added to my display case in my office….

The Mighty Thor!

I have waited for this Bowen piece for weeks ( a few months actually ) and it was well worth the wait.

This is the Thor I remember, Classic Thor, with his cape billowing in the air.

I was also talking with my friend Pete who owns ” Main Street Comics ” in Middletown, and I asked him about his feeling about the new Thor series and I’ll tell you what we both think about it in my small review of issue two in a few days.

More to come soon, I have to go and peruse what I picked up today ( including the last issue of Marvel’s The Gunslinger Born ) so go on and read a comic will ya!
