Thor #1 falls short

I picked up issue #1 of the new Thor title from Marvel, and for me the issue just fell short of my expectations.

First, I would have liked to have seen a double sized issue, rather than just the normal sized issue.

Second, I would rather have seen this issue pick up at the end of the Ragnarok storyline, and show what were the fates of the gods ( which is why a double sized issue would have been appropriate ) and than fade to what was the opening page of this first issue.

I let my wallet do the talking for me, and so I did not fall into the the different covers for the same issue trap, that is perpetuated in comics today.

And in case your wondering, I picked up the Turner cover!

As far as the rest of the comic is concerned, Olivier Coipel is adequate on the art, but no Busema. Coipel’s Thor looks a little large in the face, and for some reason ( which I can’t quite put my finger on ) just doesn’t have that godly look that I think he should possess. In fairness to Coipel thou, every artist always has and delivers their own look and interpretation of a character, and this case is no different. I would’t mind seeing a few issues with Turner doing the penciling chores thou.

Hint Hint Marvel!

Straczyanski, while still the man, really didn’t show me alot here ( again maybe due to the lack of pages ) but I do expect more. Maybe, this is going to be one of those ” build up the momentum ” type of approaches to this relaunch of one of my favorite heroes in any comic. So, I shall give the benefit of the doubt and show some patience, but just a bit okay!

In closing, I would have gladly paid an extra sawbuch for some extra pages to give me more of a first issue that I could have bit my teeth into.
