Welcome to part one of my overview of Magic the Gathering.
I am writing this article, which will be broken down into several parts ( hopefully not too many ) to give the person who is an absolute beginner, or who might have happened upon this game while others were playing and just didn’t think they could learn to play, the absolute basics of the game along with some key terms that will be helpful.
I hope you find this series helpfull and informative, and just maybe you catch the fever to go out there and buy a booster pack or a full deck!
Cheers!
Magic the Gathering
The “most played ” CCG game hands down.
Yes, Ken…I said it!
I have played this game called Magic, for many years, and although I do not go to any type of tournament any more, I thought that it might be a good idea to just go back and look at some of the basics of how the game is played, along with some basic terminology, so that those of you reading about Magic for the first time, and have never played the game, or you happened to be sitting at a table with some friends who were playing and you were totally confused, this should give you the basics you will need to better understand the game.
Keep on reading, and I promise that when your thru, you’ll have the basics down.
Magic the Gathering is what is called a ” Collectible Card Game ” or ” CCG ” for short, and what this means is that you can collect different cards to use to play the game.
To play Magic, you need a ” Deck of Cards “that consists of a minimum of 40 cards and a maximum of 60 cards. These decks also are constructed with colors in mind..
The Colors of Magic are :
White, Red, Green, Black, and my favorite color to play Blue
In Magic the gathering, these colors represent certain aspects of the game, which I will get to in part two of this article, so for now just go with the flow.
Now decks can made as varied as your imagination, and is limited only by the cards that you own, and of course your wallet or pocketbook.
A few terms we use when we refer to deck construction are the following:
Mono Color- A single color deck: Mono Red, Blue, Green, Black, or White
Two Color- A deck that is based on two colors that hopefully will work well together, like Black and Blue, or Black and White.
Three Color- This is a deck that usually has two major colors that make up almost the whole deck, with a ” Splash ” of a third color. My favorite colors to splash are either Red or Blue ( of course ).
The last two decks are either Four color or Five color decks which ( I believe ) is self explanatory.
The Colors of Magic
The five colors of Magic represent land:
White- The Plains
Red- The Mountains
Blue- The Islands
Green- The Forrests
Black- The Swamps
Each of these lands also represent Creatures and Items:
Creatures in this instance is a very misleading term, but I will explain further in part two of this article, that being said, Creatures can be broken down into three classes:
a) Humans
b) Animals
c) Creatures or in some cases Monsters
Okay, I am going to end this first part of the article here because I think there is alot of info to digest in this post….but what’s to follow…
Part Two of this series will focus on the Creatures, and Items of Magic.
